Information
Jason didn't come to live with me until he was over a year old. Prior to that time he lived in a large show kennel facility. He had come from a litter of eight and there had been two other litters on the ground at the same time. I started to work with him when he was around six months old. I would take him out for weekend visits or to go to obedience classes. At that time, Jason was extremely shy, basically afraid of his own shadow. However, there was something about him. I fell in love and I just knew that eventually he would come to be with me forever. That finally happened in Jan. 1981. Like Levi is today, Jason back then was my boy, my constant shadow, my best friend. Although he improved with age mostly because of his love and trust in me, he was always quite shy of some people. However, when he was nine years old he had finally gained enough confidence that he passed a temperament test. Now mind you, the only reason he passed the unfriendly stranger part was because there was NO WAY he was going to leave the protection of being by my side. His desire never to be too far away from me also made him very good off lead. Jason was an extremely gentle dog and although he was shy of adults he LOVED children, the smaller the better. Away from strangers, Jason was a very outgoing, fun loving dog.

Jason's other true love was his mate Poppy. I don't usually refer to two dogs in this manner but in the case of these two dogs, there was no other way to describe them. I got Poppy as a puppy at the same time as I got Jason. Until Poppy's death, Jason and Poppy were always together and they did have one litter of seven beautiful puppies, all of which had wonderful temperaments, no shyness at all. When Poppy died, Jason truly went through a long period of mourning for her.

When I first got Jason he wouldn't eat a milk bone. The only thing he would eat was his kibble. When he died at 14 years of age he was laying on the floor of my front room with me holding him feeding him carrots, which had become his favourite food. Love had brought Jason a long way but he had also given me a lifetime of love in return.

In the Show Ring
Showing Jason was obviously a challenge because of his shyness. However, he did obtain his Canadian Championship and even managed a Best of Breed win over a BIS winning Specials dog. He was a beautiful moving dog.

Obedience

Because of his shyness I actually worked with Jason in obedience prior to showing him. Jason obtained his Companion Dog Obedience title with two scores in the high 1980's and a third score in the 1970's.

Other
I wrote this poem shortly after Jason died.

   Jason
                                                   (Nov. 3, 1979 - Nov. 20, 1993)

My sweet, gentle boy is gone
                                                   The one whose kindness shined
in his face and far beyond.
My sweet, gentle boy is gone
                                                   My ever present shadow
who followed from room to room.
My sweet, gentle boy is gone
He who shared in the good times
and always gave comfort in the bad
My sweet, gentle boy is gone
To a place where he'll be free of pain
and his loving mate, Poppy awaits
My sweet, gentle boy is gone
But he will always live on
in my heart and in my soul

                                                                       FOREVER
