Information In the beginning there was Chimo and WHAT a beginning she was. No other dog since Chimo has rivalled her and I honestly don't believe a dog could have come close to her in teaching me everything I needed to know about Siberians. Chimo was absolute PURE independence until the day she died, it was ALWAYS Chimo's way and no other way. It did not matter how many obedience titles I struggled to put on this dog, those titles meant NOTHING in the real world of living with Chimo. Coming when called was just NOT in her vocabulary, it just did not exist. Escape artists extraordinaire, Chimo taught me the golden rule that one porch door was ALWAYS closed before the other door was opened. Unfortunately, there were always fences to go over or yard gates to get out off. I have more stories of chasing after Chimo down very busy city streets then my poor heart wants to remember. Fortunately, while Chimo never came to me, she did have a wonderfully solid outgoing Siberian personality and would go up and give any stranger a big warm hello. So, when I spotted her near a stranger it was always "could you call my dog to you, she will come to you but not me". Embarrassing, but it was often the only way I could get Chimo back. Chimo sure taught me to be humble! I waited a several years to be able to get my first Siberian. I had all these wonderful dreams of this loving human/dog relationship we would have. That my dog and I would go everywhere together - we would be the best of friends. Well, I have to admit that was never to be with Chimo. She was my teacher for sure but never my loyal companion. Why I ever continued on with this breed after having Chimo I don't know, maybe because I learned I could be as stubborn and persistent as she was. I did learn to respect Chimo and when I think back, like Tasy today, she did give me many laughs. She certainly taught me that ones really needs to have a very good sense of humour when owning this breed. Chimo and I grew together and now I can appreciate what a wonderful teacher she was. Chimo also gave me something else, a wonderful friendship with her breeder, Susan Shephard, that has lasted over twenty-five years and an unending love and respect for this breed. Thank you Chimo, you really did give me a lot. On the Trail Chimo never really got to work in harness because she was too old by the time I met Karen Armstrong who taught me about sledding with my dogs. However, I did have a harness for Chimo and she did get to pull a small sled around but that was about it. In the Show Ring Chimo was shown to her championship by her breeder, Susan Shephard. She finished with a Best of Breed, three-point win at the Evangeline Kennel Club on June 23, 1979. Susan and I went out to celebrate Chimo finishing her championship and left Chimo in the bathroom of the hotel room. Well, in typically Chimo fashion we returned back to the hotel room to discover that Chimo had done a very good job of trashing the bathroom including eating the door. Now, one should remember that Chimo was a housedog that by this time was perfectly fine when left at home alone. However, she obviously objected to us going out and having fun without her. Oh well, just another typical Chimo story. Obedience Well, there are more obedience ring stories about Chimo then anyone would want to hear. One lasting memory (or should I say memory I really would like to forget but can't) is the one and only time my mom came to a dog show to watch one of my dogs. I had Chimo in the Novice Obedience at that time. Well, with mom watching, Chimo proceeded to go through the whole test WITHOUT passing a single exercise. Her "crowning" performance was with the recall. She came flying into me, looking great. Then two feet away from me she dashed off, ran around the obedience ring, the jumped into the conformation ring where she totally disrupted that ring. Then she jumped back into the obedience ring where she let everyone know what she thought of obedience by have a big poop in the middle of the ring! Strangely enough my mom has never come back to a dog show again. I now forget how it all went but it took over 15 tries to get her CD title and close to that for her CDX title. She did do better when it came to her American CD. I only had to take her down to the U.S. to two group of trials. The first was a series of five trials. She passed the first two, no problem, but then had to remind me that she was Chimo and failed the next three days, once getting up on the long down as the judge was saying "return to your dogs". However, Chimo actually redeemed herself when I took her down to the 1982 US National Specialty where she finished her American CD with a third highest in Class! |
